Cruiser kid all growed up

Kudos and congratulations going out to Douglas Stanford, of Anacortes, Washington, who was just awarded a Marshall Scholarship, which will cover tuition, research, and other costs to attend a British university for two years!

Stanford spent 5 years circumnavigating the globe with his family aboard the Margarita, a LaFitte 44. His last email announcing the closing of that voyage, in 2002, is online along with a wonderful site about the boat, crew, and journeys.

Mind you, Marshall Scholarships are given to only 40 US students per year, and they’re highly competitive. Stanford, a physics major, hopes to spend a year studying mathematics at Cambridge in preparation for sitting Part III of Cambridge University’s Mathematical Tripos. After that he plans two years at Oxford studying conformal field theory toward a doctorate in physics.
