The San Juan Islands, with about 200 various pieces of land involved, are a world-wide recognized cruising destination. And very popular during the summer ’season’. As the fishing, agriculture, and lumbering industries have waned on the islands tourism has grown up to be the primary, almost sole, economic engine. As such, almost every square inch of land is somebody’s private summer getaway or a public-serving mecca, or an artisan’s studio though there are marine and island parks peppered through.
There is so much to do it’s sometimes bewildering. And there are so many other boats to share the anchorages and sunsets with it’s sometimes frustrating. Yet there’s no denying the ultimate charm and beauty of the (sometimes) quiet anchorages and waterways.
The destinations here are sorted by Island and Waterway, and generally from South to North. All the islands of Whatcom and Island counties in Washington are included, as is Point Roberts which, while not an island at all, is still completely separated from Mainland USA. Of course this list is by no means comprehensive; these are just the ones we’ve actually been to and have had time to write up. Some of the information about available services is drawn from websites, publications, or second-hand; take it with a grain of salt and do not rely on it.
