Sailor survives explosion

The Northern Star is reporting a boat explosion and sinking off Ballina, NSW, Australia.

While the details are sketchy, it appears a galley fire led to the man abandoning ship, and moments later the boat exploded with such a degree of force the boat sank nearly immediately. The explosion alerted other boaters as well as lifeguards ashore.

“The boat disintegrated in the explosion,” said Inspector Greg Moore, of Ballina police, who traveled to the scene aboard the Ballina Jet Boat Surf Rescue vessel. They transfered the man from other boats who had arrived earlier to render assistance and brought him back to Ballina where he was brought to the hospital suffering from shock but not otherwise injured.
